The Flathead Finance Program offers a once a month, one day, eight-hour Homebuyer Education course utilizing the Pathways Home: A Native Guide to Homeownership curriculum. The curriculum covers financial topics like budgeting, working with checking and savings accounts, understanding credit and credit reports, and how to access credit, as well as eight modules exploring homeownership, mortgages, affordability, credit, applying for loans, meeting financial obligations, predatory lending and protecting investments. The course also incorporates information specific to the unique characteristics of the Flathead Reservation to help clients understand the difference between fee land and tribal trust land. Clients who complete the course then receive one-on-one credit counseling, and when they are ready, they begin the home purchase process.
