In 2021 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a mandate that every Public Water System was required to complete an inventory of every water service line within their water system. The subterranean pipe, or service line delivers water from the water main – likely located in the street – to your home or building.
Most service lines are made of copper, plastic, galvanized iron or steel; however, some older homes have been found to have had lead pipes/service lines. Lead-contained pipes provide a health danger when it comes to drinking water. The use of lead service line was banned in 1986 to 1988 pending the State.
SKHA W/S Operations Department has completed the initial inventory of all service lines within their Public Water Systems (20 systems). We have identified several services lines that are of an unknown material due to no historical information regarding those particular service lines.
SKHA W/S will now be working towards identifying the portions of the service line located on the resident-owned portion & on the Housing Authority’s side of the curb stop. In order to accurately classify and document all service lines and comply with EPA regulations, this project will depend on the help of both our customers and the water/sewer staff. Many of the service lines that we have already identified have been designated as “unknown material”, this is where your input will be valuable.
